Where Are We Now?

UPDATE: There were many problems with the SPOT Tracker, the second largest problem being it stopped charging properly. Since Guadeloupe we stopped using the tracker completely.

Gaia has a SPOT Tracker that sends our GPS location to a satellite every 10 minutes whenever we are moving – it works even in the open ocean when we don’t have any internet connection.

I’ve written some custom scripts that automatically download our position from SPOT’s website to display below.  If there aren’t any recent updates below, it most likely means we’re anchored at the last updated location.

You can also check our page on SPOT’s website, just in case my python scripts aren’t working.

Our Anchorages

2016 Jan

Guadeloupe

Deshaies (adorable beautiful anchorage), Pigeon Island (Jacques Cousteau Underwater Park is a must see!) , The Saintes (one of my favorites places in our journey), Base Terre (pass – meh)

Dominica

Portsmouth (main Northern anchorage, you can get taxis and tour guides easily from here to see the rest of the island. good anchorage but mooring balls are taking up all the good spots. best to anchor as close to the beach as possible.)

Antigua

English Harbor (good protection in the mangroves, crowded and rolly near the entrance but far more picturesque), Green Island (beautiful, quintessential Antigua), Jumby Bay (fancy resort nearby beautiful anchorage) Deep Bay (fun to stroll around on land -ruins) Dickensons Bay (enormous bay, long beach. good holding not much protection from the NW, WNW), Jolly Harbor (fun in town restaurants, wide open anchorage surprisingly calm)

2016 Feb

Montserrat

Little Bay (not much protection if it blows anywhere from N,S, or W. The anchorage had constant surge that rocked the boat none-stop. we stayed two nights but didn’t sleep. Montserrat was one of my favorite places to visit.)

St. Kitts & Nevis (St. Christophers)

Basse Terre (poor holding and not much room to anchor. we went straight into the marina, your right next to the “cruise ship entry town” so you can shop… bit once you leave the cruise ship shopping arena it turns into a more realistic town of St. Kitts. people there were wonderful), White House Bay ($18 dollar cocktails… need I say more? over the top gorgeous ambiance and decor. nearby construction for a marina targeted at vacationing millionaires & their yachts… so prices are steep. fun snorkeling. i liked it here!)

St. Eustatius (Statia)

Gallows Bay (I believe this is the only anchorage on the circular island. Again if there is any build up in seas, you’re in for a bumpy night even with a stern anchor. it was slightly less bumpy than montserrat. This island was also one of my favorite places to visit. we loved hiking in the volcano)

St. Barts

Anse de Colombier (we skipped anchoring in the main anchorage to clear in. its a wide open anchorage so it gets bumpy. there’s a lot of boat traffic so that also adds to the chop. Anse de Colombier was beautiful and short hikes near are beautiful)

St. Maartin

Grand Case (great holding, very calm, well protected. on land is known to be st. martins best town for food. perfect anchorage…? i think so. Tuesdays are carnival night, the streets come alive with all forms of street vendors, music, food, dancing and did I mention street food… ), Marigot Bay (always room for one more, decently calm, great croissant aux almond chocolate on land. long but doable dinghy ride to the Dutch side in the lagoon – helps if you can get on a plane on your dinghy.)
